Dauntless SBD Dive Bomber

The Dauntless SBD Dive Bomber. This was the US Navy's carrier based bomber.  This Aircraft saw it's successes and failures in the Pacific during the war. The SBD's most widely known success was at the battle of Midway.

     

 

Notice the dive flaps in this view, they controlled speed when diving on target.

 

 

 

 

 

 

"Val" Japanese Dive bomber

The "Val" Japanese Dive bomber. This was used extensively by the Japanese Navy in the Pacific.  Like the SBD the "Val" experienced it's share of successes and losses.  

 

 

 

      Grumman F4F Wildcat

  

The US Navy Wildcat powered by a 1,200 hp 14 cylinder engine.  Cruising speed of 155 mph and had a range of 770 miles.

 

Soviet Yak-9

The Soviet Yak-9.   An example of awesome war engineering.  The Russians produced the Yak-9 fighter in large numbers.  So dangerous was this aircraft that German pilots were told to avoid engaging it below 15000 ft.  

    

    

                                

 

           

 

 

 

Douglas C-54 Skymaster 

Like the C-47 it had many variations.  It was based on a known civilian aircraft the DC-4.  It first flew in early 1942 and eventually 1,242 were built. It gained its fame during the Berlin airlift.  It's role it played during the airlift is for what is most remembered.
