The B-17 Memphis Belle from WWII fame.

Memphis Belle was the first B-17 complete 25 mission with the 8th Air Force. This example of an earlier model B-17 does not have the chin turret. The chin turret was added later in the war in response to German frontal attacks on bomber formations.

The later model B-17's sport the twin 50's in a chin turret.

In my mind, no other poem from the second World War brings the reality of the conflict home more then Randall Jarrell's "Death of the Ball Turret Gunner".

The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner
by Randall Jarrell

1914-1965

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from the dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.
